Crappy end to a crappy semester....

Just a couple of announcements as the year comes to its undignified end...

First, I am on skype and teams now and if you want to consult with me then send a email (to my university address) so we can set up a time.

Second, I'm sure you've heard of the exam situation and how it has made the writing and presentation outlines pointless (for now...).  But I'll probably have third year next year so if you end up in one of my groups then we'll have a chance to get back to those (I've already decided to make an academic presentation in class a requirement in the third year).

Overall, I'm sure you all agree that this semester has been a bust...

I had such great plans!

But they didn't quite work out....

Let's just hope the university really does re-open in October (I'm nervous that they'll chicken out even though it's clear this whole coronavirus thing isn't really that serious).

Good luck on the exam and see y'all in October!

Announcement regarding the return to classes!

Okay, given the..... unusual course that this semester has taken and given a June return to classes (I know it might not happen, but we have to plan as if it will) I'm setting out a few tentative policies.

Spoken presentations.

If you have not done the general interest presentation yet, then try to be ready on our return to class or at the latest two weeks thereafter (since there won't be class on June 11...).

We won't do any academic presentations in class (or at most I might do a demonstration to show how it should differ from the general interest presentation).

We will look at academic presentation outlines in class and people might be asked to speak for a few minutes about their topics.

We will also look at writing outlines in class. I will remove the names of students before we look at outlines (you may identify yourself or remain anonymous while we look at it).

Try to get at least one outline (of the three formats - essay, review, letter to the editor) in acceptable form before classes end (in July?)

I know I'm behind in giving you feedback on outlines but it's very... frustrating to try to figure out what feedback to give as problems that could be resolved in 30 seconds or less require email transactions....

You don't have to finish any written assignment before the exam but any work you do on beginning and/or finishing the written assignments will only help your final class grade.

If, for whatever reason, classes do not restart the first week of June then.... I don't know, I just don't know....

As always, take care, stay healthy and wear your masks (over your noses too!)

Continuing reminder Academic Presenations!

Another reminder to send in your academic topics and/or preliminary academic outlines.

As always, take care and stay healthy!

Class Materials for April 09, 2020

First, here is some help for your academic presentation outlines.

There are two sample outlines for you. Please note that they have bibliographies.

There is also some information on how to format bibliography entries. Generally you don't have to include everything, but you should have two to 6 (2-6) sources. Wikipedia cannot be used as a source (it's a great place to go to find sources but it's not a source by itself).

Also, you should stop working on written assignments until you have submitted an outline for the academic presentation to me. The academic presentation is your number one priority at this time.

I will ask some people if I can share my editing of your outlines with the other students (anonymously for the time being).

Even if we start real, in person classes again on April 30 we won't have time to do full academic presentations in class. Therefore it's really important to have them done as much as possible before then.
Most of the time in classes will be spent on writing and excerpts from academic presentations (it'll be okay, you'll see).

Also, here's a dissenting opinion about the disappearance of work: The idea is that capitalism will always create jobs (even if many of them are bullshit jobs).

As always, take care and stay healthy! and...

Have a Happy Easter!

Class Assignment(s) for April 02, 2020

 Three things this week.

First, let's have a fun video! This will help you think about the future of work (if you have not yet thought about it....). This is not the only opinion. I'll post a new video every few days (next one - Monday). Please note that there are Polish subtitles if you need/want them...

Second, I'm dividing you all into two groups.

Group one: Those of you who have an academic topic selected and cleared with me. You should just  keep on keepin' on (as the old song said). That means start working on an outline and when you have a first draft, then send it to me. The name of the document should be
Yourlastname academic 1 (use your real last name in place of 'yourlastname').

Group two: Do not yet have an academic topic selected and cleared with me. Send me an email as soon as possible with a topic that you think you can do (that is you can find online resources for it).

Third, if you haven't sent me an email declaration yet, then please do so (include the word declaration in the subject line). Don't worry about translating it (I can read Polish just fine). But if you haven't sent it then get to that right away.

Take care and stay healthy!

Class Materials for March 26, 2020

Three things this week....

First, download and become acquainted with the following material. Start looking for an article but you don't need to do an outline (yet).

Second, it wouldn't hurt if you sent me a declaration about participating in remote (zdalne) classes (in their present form I'm not planning on doing videos yet.... be thankful for that).

Third, as soon as possible confirm your academic topic with me and start on an outline (and send it to me). I would like to start with presentations as soon as we start classes again (I'm hopeful, yes).

Take care and stay healthy!

Class Materials for March 26 - slight delay...

The university is having me fill out things to prove that I'm conducting remote classes which has caused a delay in posting this week's material....
It should be up by 18.00 today.

Take care and stay healthy!

czwartek, 19 marca 2020

Class Materials for March 19, 2020

For this week, become acquainted with this material.

You can also (within the next weeks) send me a review outline.

 Have more than this, though...

Take care and stay safe!

czwartek, 12 marca 2020

Class Materials for Thursday March 12, 2020

Please send me the outlines for your essays and send me your list of potential academic topics. If I've told you that you can start work on the presentation itself then please let me know as well.

Take care and stay healthy!
